Tooth decay is no joke – it's the most common chronic childhood disease, and over 50 percent of 5 to 9-year-old children have at least one cavity or filling. The situation only gets worse as they get older; by age 17, a whopping 78 percent of kids have tooth decay. In fact, dental-related illness causes more than 51 million school hours to be lost each year. But don't worry – with proper oral hygiene and regular checkups at our office, we can help protect your child from tooth decay.
As part of our comprehensive preventive care program, we recommend the application of dental sealants. These thin, plastic-like coatings are painted onto your child's newly erupted permanent back teeth to provide additional protection during their cavity-prone years. The effectiveness of dental sealants is well documented – according to the American Dental Association, they can reduce the risk of cavities in school-age children by approximately 80%. In fact, kids who don't receive dental sealants develop almost three times more cavities than those who do have them.
Once applied and set, dental sealants are quite durable and can last for several years. However, we will evaluate their condition during routine dental check-up visits to make sure they remain intact and reapply as needed.
